Sono una nota band rock americana formatasi a Jacksonville, in Florida nel 1964. La band acquistò importanza durante gli anni settanta, capeggiata dal cantante e principale autore dei testi Ronnie Van Zant, fino alla sua morte avvenuta in un incidente aereo nel 1977 assieme a una grande parte della band. La band si riformò nel 1987 per un reunion tour con il cantante Johnny Van Zant, frontman come il fratello. La band ha continuato a fare tour e registrare ma dal 2010 tra i suoi membri originali è rimasto solo Gary Rossington. Il gruppo è stato inoltre inserito nella Rock and Roll Hall of Fame il 13 marzo 2006.
