E' stato un chitarrista, compositore, arrangiatore, cantante, direttore d'orchestra, produttore discografico, regista, sceneggiatore, attore, produttore cinematografico e polistrumentista statunitense.

Definire il genere musicale di Zappa è praticamente impossibile, ma si può affermare che fosse coinvolto in ambiti musicali come rock, blues, jazz, fusion, avanguardia e musica classica.
