((Memphis, 25 marzo 1942 – Detroit, 16 agosto 2018) è una cantautrice e pianista statunitense, una delle icone della musica gospel, soul e R&B.
Cresciuta a Detroit, è soprannominata "La Regina del Soul" o "Lady Soul nel'aggiungere una venatura soul a qualsiasi cosa canti e per le sue enormi doti vocali. Lo Stato del Michigan ha ufficialmente dichiarato la sua voce «una meraviglia della natura».È molto nota per la sua vasta produzione di musica soul e R&B ma anche jazz, rock, blues, pop, hip hop, gospel e lirica che le hanno meritato ben 21 premi Grammy (otto dei quali vinti consecutivamente nella stessa categoria dal 1968 al 1975; in quel periodo il premio veniva chiamato The Aretha Award, ossia "Il premio Aretha").
In una classifica stilata nel 2004 dalla rivista Rolling Stone, Aretha è stata classificata al nono posto, che è anche il piazzamento più alto per una donna tra i 100 artisti più grandi nella storia. Sempre da questa rivista è stata giudicata la più grande cantante di tutti i tempi.
Il 9 febbraio 2017 ha annunciato a una radio di Detroit che non terrà più concerti.
Il 13 agosto 2018 viene diffusa la notizia che la cantante è ricoverata in ospedale a Detroit in gravi condizioni. Muore nella propria abitazione per complicanze del cancro al pancreas il 16 agosto dello stesso anno.
