Dotato di grande fascino, carisma e di una forte presenza scenica, dagli anni trenta fino alla sua morte, nel 1960, fu una delle maggiori star della cinematografia mondiale.
Il suo nome è indissolubilmente legato all'interpretazione di Rhett Butler nello storico film Via col vento (1939), vincitore di ben dieci Premi Oscar.
